Remembrance Sunday is 8 November 2026. Last year Abingdon's service began at St Helen's at 10am, with the silence at the Ock Street war memorial at 11am.

Remembrance Sunday falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, and Armistice Day on Wednesday 11 November. Abingdon on Thames Town Council had not published this year’s arrangements by 25 September. Last year’s, which followed the same shape as the town’s usual act of remembrance, are set out below from the council’s own notice and order of service, so you know what to expect and where to stand.

The quick answer

  • Remembrance Sunday is Sunday 8 November 2026; the two minutes’ silence is at 11am.
  • In 2025 the town’s day ran: parade from the Guildhall to St Helen’s Church, a 10am service, then at 10.30am a parade to the war memorial at the junction of Ock Street and Bath Street, where the memorial service began at 10.50am.
  • The 2026 times, and any road closures, are not yet confirmed. Last year’s details were published on 3 November.

How the day ran in 2025

The town council’s Remembrance Sunday 2025 notice, posted on 3 November 2025, said the day would start “with a parade from the Guildhall in Abingdon to St. Helen’s Church” and that “all are welcome to attend”. Its order of service fills in the rest:

Time (2025) What happened Where
Before 10am Parade from the Guildhall Guildhall to St Helen’s Church
10am A Service of Remembrance and Reconciliation, led by the Team Rector St Helen’s Church
10.30am Parade from the church to the war memorial West St Helen Street to the memorial
10.50am Remembrance at the war memorial Junction of Ock Street and Bath Street
11am Two minutes’ silence, Reveille from Abingdon Town Band, laying of wreaths War memorial
Afterwards March past, with the salute taken by the Mayor County Hall, Market Place

Organisations carrying standards form up on West St Helen Street after the church service, and the order of service invites everyone in the congregation to walk to the memorial for the silence. Music in 2025 was by Abingdon Town Band.

If you want to see the march past, the Market Place in front of County Hall is where the Mayor takes the salute. For the silence itself, the space around the memorial at the top of Ock Street is the place to be; arrive before 10.50am.

Faringdon: an exhibition from 6 to 8 November

Faringdon Town Council is putting on a Remembrance Exhibition from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 November 2026, and has asked residents to lend memorabilia, photographs, documents or personal stories from the two world wars and other conflicts. Anyone with items to lend, or willing to help staff it, can email admin@faringdontowncouncil.gov.uk (Faringdon Town Council, 17 August 2026). The venue and opening hours are not yet published.

Still to be confirmed

  • Abingdon’s 2026 service times, officiant and parade route. The town council published last year’s on 3 November; we will update this page when this year’s notice appears.
  • Road closures. Oxfordshire County Council’s large public events list, which carries formal orders for the Michaelmas Fair and the Abingdon Marathon, had no Remembrance entry on 25 September.
  • Wantage’s arrangements. Wantage Town Council’s website could not be read when we checked, so we have not listed times for the Wantage parade.
