No trains or buses run from Abingdon on Christmas Day. Boxing Day's bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December, and last year only the X2 ran on Boxing Day.

Abingdon has no railway station, so Christmas travel here means two things: the buses into Oxford and Didcot, and the trains from Radley and Didcot Parkway. On Christmas Day, Friday 25 December 2026, neither runs. In 2026 the Boxing Day bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December, because Boxing Day falls on a Saturday. The operators have not yet published their 2026 festive timetables, so this page sets out what is confirmed, what happened last Christmas, and when each piece is due.

The quick answer

  • No National Rail trains and no local buses on Christmas Day, 25 December 2026.
  • National Rail says trains on many routes will finish early on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, and the Boxing Day bank holiday is Monday 28 December. GWR’s timetables for Radley and Didcot are not out yet.
  • Last Christmas, the X2 was the only Abingdon bus route running on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, on a special timetable.

Trains: what National Rail has confirmed for 2026/27

Radley and Culham stations are on GWR’s line between Didcot Parkway and Oxford, and Didcot Parkway is the fast route to London. National Rail’s Christmas and New Year 2026/27 summary covers Thursday 24 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027 and sets the framework:

Date What National Rail says
Thursday 24 December Services on many routes finish earlier than normal. Last trains from London guide due late November or early December
Friday 25 December No National Rail services
Saturday 26 December Most operators run no service; a very limited service from a few operators, details to be confirmed
Monday 28 December Substitute Boxing Day bank holiday; services to be confirmed
Thursday 31 December Services on some routes finish earlier than normal
Friday 1 January 2027 Special late services on some London routes after midnight; guide due early December

National Rail says each operator’s plans will be added “from the beginning of October onwards”. The only major engineering work it had named by 25 September was at Birmingham New Street, closed from 24 to 28 December, which affects CrossCountry trains through Oxford and Didcot to the Midlands and the North.

GWR’s own Christmas engineering page still carried a holding line about “Christmas 2025” when we checked on 25 September: details “have yet to be finalised”.

What happened last Christmas

The Radley Parish Council notice of 8 December 2025, passing on GWR’s advice, listed track renewal work affecting some trains to and from London Paddington between 27 December and 4 January, and replacement buses between Maidenhead, Slough and Hayes and Harlington until about 11am on 4 January. It gave no closure of the Didcot to Oxford line through Radley. That is last year’s pattern, not a promise for this one.

Buses: last year’s pattern

Abingdon’s buses are run by Oxford Bus Company and its sister firm Thames Travel. Their Abingdon services page lists the X2 and X3 (Oxford, Redbridge Park and Ride, Abingdon, Didcot), the 44 (Oxford via Botley and Wootton), the 45 (to Templars Square via Culham), the X15 (Oxford to Witney via Abingdon), the 33 (to Didcot, Wallingford and Henley), the X35 (Wantage) and the 41 town service.

The 2026 festive timetable has not been published. Oxford Bus Company’s 2025/26 festive services page set out this pattern for 24 December 2025 to 3 January 2026:

Day 2025/26 pattern
Christmas Eve Most routes on a Saturday timetable with an early finish; the 41 and 45 on a full weekday timetable; no night buses
Christmas Day No local buses
Boxing Day Special service on the X2, the airline coach and a list of Oxford city routes; every other route suspended
27 and 28 December Normal Saturday, then Sunday timetable
29 and 30 December Saturday timetable on most routes; the 41 and 45 on weekday timetables
New Year’s Eve Saturday timetable with an early finish on most routes; no night buses
New Year’s Day Special service on the X2 and a handful of Oxford routes only
2 January Saturday timetable on most routes

In 2026 the days fall differently: Christmas Day is a Friday and the substitute bank holiday is Monday 28 December, so expect the Boxing Day style of service to move around. Check the operator’s page before you travel.

For the Oxford Tube to London, Stagecoach ran no coaches on Christmas Day 2025 and special timetables on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, 29 to 31 December and New Year’s Day (Stagecoach Oxfordshire Christmas 2025).

Parking over Christmas

The Vale of White Horse District Council’s car parks in Abingdon give the first hour free all year, and several are free on Sundays; the full tariff table is on our parking in Abingdon page. The council had published no Christmas parking offer for 2026 by 25 September, and its page announcing an earlier year’s free parking days now returns a 404.

Still to be confirmed

  • GWR’s Christmas timetable and engineering works for Radley, Culham and Didcot: expected from October, with the last trains guide in late November.
  • Oxford Bus and Thames Travel festive timetables: last year’s were out by early December.
  • Any Christmas parking concession from the Vale.
